BSP’s Statement on the Recent Events and Protests

We are deeply saddened by the recent killings and abuse of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Elijah McClain, Jacob Blake, and other Black Americans.  As lawyers and legal professionals, it is incumbent on us to support a legal system that is both fair and just.   We must speak up when we see injustice of any kind.

As a woman-owned law firm, one of BSP’s core foundational values is diversity.  We challenge our team to be champions for change and relentlessly pursue equality.  We will continue to commit to educating our team through our diversity and inclusion initiatives.  We will continue to serve as fierce advocates through our pro bono efforts.  We will continue to condemn intolerance of any kind and hold our team members to the highest standards.  And we will continue to expand our efforts.

BSP stands with our employees, communities, and clients.  We believe black lives matter. Together we can listen and learn, offer words and actions of support, and embrace and amplify the message of peaceful protestors across the country.

One of the many unfortunate realities of our criminal justice system is that Black Americans are more likely to be arrested; once arrested, they are more likely to be convicted; and once convicted, they are more likely to experience lengthy prison sentences.  Beyond that, the impact of a criminal record on one’s future is often pervasive and long-lasting.  With that in mind, we are donating our time and money to Project Clean Slate, an initiative of Detroit at Work and the Detroit Law Department to help residents get their criminal records expunged to gain access to better jobs, housing, and educational opportunities.  Project Clean Slate is free to all eligible Detroit residents.  Additionally, we will be donating to the NAACP Legal and Educational Defense Fund.  We will continue to identify ways to leverage our unique platform and resources to uplift our community.  We urge each of you to do the same
